Workshop | Assessment to Action: Creating an Effective DEI Training Program
***This is a two-part workshop during periods 1 and 2. Attendees should choose both during the registration process.
Do you find it challenging to connect the dots between DEI concepts and your department's work? Are you faced with limited resources or organizational support that affect your team's progress?
In these sessions, we will collaborate on creating a roadmap to create an inclusive DEI training program. We will explore the fundamentals of assessing training needs while recognizing your vital role as a change agent within the public sector. By identifying gaps in your agency's knowledge, skills, and abilities, you will gain valuable insight into prioritizing training areas and learn how to determine the most effective starting point for organizational growth. This session goes beyond theory; it offers a personalized and engaging experience. We will have time to learn, reflect, and actively plan for your team's future growth and development. Join me in these innovative sessions to equip yourself with the knowledge and tools necessary to become an influential driver of DEI within the public sector, fostering organizational growth that makes a lasting impact.
Workshop 1 (Assessment): This interactive segment will teach you methods to assess your team’s unique needs and challenges when developing a DEI training program. We will explore creative strategies for designing an engaging and impactful learning experience, learn how to develop a clear and relevant learning curriculum, and craft training materials that are accessible and relatable to your team. You will gain the confidence to design your program effectively through practical and tailored examples.
Workshop 2 (Action): Now that you've gained the tools to design your program and know your how, when, and why, you will learn how to apply those tools to implement a DEI training program. Through scenarios and interactive discussions, we will address common setbacks encountered by public employees and collaborate on finding practical solutions to implementing your DEI training program.

DEI Training Analyst for the Bureau of Portland Parks & Recreation
She/Her
Nathalys Puerta is the DEI Training Analyst for the Bureau of Portland Parks & Recreation. She immigrated from Venezuela in 2017 with an international degree in Modern Languages (English/French). She has more than nine years of experience leading discussions and activities promoting diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging. Her varied work background includes assisting international survivors of trauma, immigrant, and refugees, delivering care services for high-risk foster youth and their families, and educating and training at various schools and organizations. Nathalys has also facilitated DEI initiatives and workforce development for healthcare professionals, City of Portland bureaus, and various organizations.
